Things to Do in NYC in December: Eight Holiday Picks
The best things to do in NYC in December are the Rockefeller Center tree, ice skating, the Dyker Heights lights and New Year's Eve in Times Square. December days are cold, with an average high of 44 °F, so dress warm and plan for the cold.
December in New York has dated events, cold air and long evenings, so a good plan mixes a few big sights with warm breaks. The picks below start with the tree and end with New Year's Eve. Each one says what is free, what to book and what we could not confirm.
Weather shapes every day. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Central Park put the December average high at about 44 °F and the average low at about 34 °F. They also list about 5 inches of snow for the month. Wear a warm coat, gloves and shoes that handle wet sidewalks.
1. Rockefeller Center tree: lit on December 2
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit on Wednesday, December 2, 2026. NYC Tourism lists the 2026 tree season as December 2, 2026 to January 9, 2027 and says the lighting is traditionally on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving. It also says the tree stays lit until early to mid-January. Rockefeller Center's own page returned an error when we opened it, and the NYC Tourism page gives no ceremony time, so we cannot confirm the time. Check the date and time before you plan around it. Other dated events in this guide are the Bryant Park Winter Village, which opened October 28, Cozy Igloos from November 5, and New Year's Eve in Times Square on December 31, when the Ball drops at 11:59 pm.
Standing near the tree is the simplest way to see it, and no ticket is needed to look at it from the street. Free to see in this guide are the tree, New Year's Eve in Times Square and the High Line. Dyker Heights can be visited on your own too, and the displays are on public streets, so it is free to look, but no official page states a cost or dates. NYC Tourism's 2023 holiday release lists Dyker Heights among its free and affordable holiday ideas and says residents light up their homes with over-the-top decor, but it gives no dates and does not say "free" in so many words. NYC Tourism publishes the basics for skating at Rockefeller Center. The rink is on 48th to 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, the 2026-27 season runs from October 10, 2026 to March 1, 2027, and the page lists general admission, VIP skating, season passes and rink-side chalets. The page says crowds "tend to swell closer to the holidays," so expect longer waits in December, and it lists the rink as wheelchair accessible. It does not publish hours, ticket prices or skate rental costs, and the Rockefeller Center ticket page would not open for us, so check rockefellercenter.com/tickets/the-rink-at-rockefeller-center for the price of your date. The rink is a short walk from the Bryant Park rink, and an NYC Tourism release for the 2023 season said Bryant Park offers free ice skating with skates to rent. That was last season, and the park's page now lists no price. Wollman Rink, below, has published hours. Because it sits right under the tree, expect it to be the busiest of the three around the tree lighting. The deck at Top of the Rock is the observation deck in the same Rockefeller Center complex. We could not open Rockefeller Center's ticket page, so we cannot confirm December hours or prices for the deck. Look at the official page for both.
Pro Tip Reserve the Bryant Park rink or an igloo early for peak dates, because the park's own website urges visitors to book those dates before they sell out.
2. Bryant Park Winter Village: skating and igloos in Midtown
Bryant Park's Bank of America Winter Village opens at noon on October 28, and the park's website says ice skating is among the activities you can reserve. Cozy Igloos return on November 5, 2026, and the park urges visitors to reserve peak dates early. The park's homepage gives no closing date, so check it for the end of the season.
Skating here puts you in the middle of Midtown, a short walk from Rockefeller Center. The page does not list rink prices or skate rental costs, so check them when you reserve.
3. Wollman Rink: skating in Central Park
Wollman Rink in Central Park is open for ice skating from October to April, according to the Central Park Conservancy. The rink sits on the East Side at 63rd Street. The Conservancy lists hours of 10 am to 10 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 10 am to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 9 pm on Sunday, and 10 am to 2:30 pm on Monday and Tuesday. Holiday hours can differ, so check before you go.
Wollman's listing is the easy way to book. The Wollman Rink ticket with skate rental from €25 is run by Wollman Rink NYC and includes skates. Lockers cost extra, and the ice closes for 30 minutes during resurfacing.
4. Dyker Heights: Brooklyn homes covered in lights
Dyker Heights is a Brooklyn neighborhood, and the tour listing describes homes glowing with tens of thousands of lights. No official city page lists dates for the displays, so we cannot say when they start or end. Go in the evening in December, once it is dark. The displays are on private homes along public streets, so looking costs nothing, but no official page confirms that or the dates. Of the Christmas displays in this guide, the tree, the Dyker Heights lights, the High Line and New Year's Eve in Times Square cost nothing to see, while rink skating, the cruise and the concert are ticketed.
You can go on your own, but a tour solves the trip across the city. The Dyker Heights lights and skyline tour from €40 is run by TOUR AMERICA and lasts four hours. It meets at 1651 Broadway, uses a bus to Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, and ends with a skyline stop at the Brooklyn Bridge. Hotel pickup is not included, food and tips cost extra, and the listing says it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. It goes ahead in rain or snow.
5. A holiday harbor cruise
A holiday cruise shows the Manhattan skyline from the water in the festive season. The holiday yacht cruise with jazz, cocoa and carols from €120 is run by Classic Harbor Line and leaves from Chelsea Piers. It lasts 90 minutes. The price includes live music, holiday biscuits and one drink, and tips and extra drinks cost more.
At €120, the yacht cruise is the priciest pick on the list. Book it ahead, because it is a ticketed trip with set departures.
6. Harlem gospel holiday concert
A gospel concert in Harlem is a seasonal indoor option for a December evening. The Harlem gospel holiday celebration concert from €34 is run by Welcome to Harlem and meets at 201 Lenox Ave. Welcome to Harlem's page says you also see the former Temple Israel, built in 1907, and the Mount Morris Park Historic District. Meals and drinks are not included. The listing page does not state a length or dates, so check the calendar when you book.
7. New Year's Eve in Times Square
New Year's Eve in Times Square is free, and no tickets are needed. The Times Square Alliance says the viewing areas open at 3 pm and fill on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ball is raised at about 6 pm and makes its 60-second descent at 11:59 pm.
The rules are strict, so plan for them. The Times Square Alliance's New Year's Eve FAQ says that if you leave your viewing area, even to eat, you cannot return to your spot. Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs and alcohol are banned, and all bags are searched. Seventh Avenue and Broadway close to traffic from 38th to 59th Streets at about 11 am. If you cannot face the crowd, the same page says a free webcast starts at 6 pm on December 31.
Key Takeaway The Rockefeller Center tree is lit on December 2 and the Times Square Ball drops at 11:59 pm on December 31, so a December trip has two firm dates to plan around.
8. The High Line in winter
The High Line is a free park above the street, and from December 1 it closes earlier. The High Line's visit page lists 7 am to 10 pm from April 1 to November 30 and 7 am to 8 pm from December 1 to March 31.

How to choose things to do in NYC in December
Match the pick to the time of day and your budget. The table shows when each one works and what it needs from you.
| Pick | When | Do it on your own or book |
|---|---|---|
| Rockefeller Center tree | Lit December 2 | On your own, check the time first |
| Bryant Park Winter Village | Opens October 28 | Reserve the rink or igloos on the park's site |
| Wollman Rink | October to April | Ticket with skates from €25 |
| Dyker Heights lights | No official dates | Tour from €40, or go on your own |
| Holiday harbor cruise | Evening | Book a seat, from €120 |
| Harlem gospel concert | Seasonal listing | Book a ticket, from €34 |
| Times Square on New Year's Eve | December 31 | Free, arrive by 3 pm |
| High Line | Winter hours from December 1 | Free, closes at 8 pm |
Doing it yourself costs nothing for the tree, the High Line and New Year's Eve, and you only need good timing, so a tour is the wrong choice for those three. For skating, buying a ticket on your own is simpler than a tour, since the Wollman ticket already includes skates from €25. For Dyker Heights, going alone saves the fare but means a long trip to Brooklyn after dark. The tour from €40 covers the bus and a guide, but food and tips cost extra. The cruise needs a boat, so booking is the only way, and at €120 for 90 minutes it is the one pick with no cheaper do-it-yourself version. The Harlem concert from €34 is a seat at a set show, so a tour is not the question there; you either book it or skip it. For ice skating, we could confirm Bryant Park and Wollman Rink but not a Rockefeller Center rink, so we do not describe that one.
Things to Do in NYC's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 11 holiday-season tours, cruises and concerts, from €34 per person.
Christmas Day is the one day to plan on purpose. Statue City Cruises runs every day except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and Chelsea Market is closed on Christmas Day. Keep that day for free walks, the park and a booked evening.
The best December days in New York pair one booked event with a warm place to duck into between stops.
What December costs for hotels
Hotels are often the biggest cost of a December trip, and no official source publishes December room rates. Compare dates on Booking.com before you choose. For the rest of your costs, see our guide to a new york trip on a budget.
Staying in Midtown puts the tree, Bryant Park and New Year's Eve within walking distance. Pod Times Square sits on West 42nd Street and is rated 8.6 on Booking.com. Hotel Scherman sits on West 46th Street, is rated 9.2 and serves a continental breakfast. Both sit inside the streets that close on December 31, so plan your arrival that day. For other areas, see our guide to a new york on a budget hotel by neighborhood.
Book one holiday evening ahead
The free sights need no ticket, so do those on your own. The lights tour, the cruise and the gospel concert are worth booking early, because the bus, the boat and the seats are the point. Ratings are 4.6 from 1,008 reviews for the Dyker Heights tour, 4.7 from 572 for the cruise, 4.4 from 115 for Wollman skating and 4.7 from 837 for the Harlem concert. Free cancellation terms are shown on each booking page, so read them before you pay. The Dyker Heights tour takes four hours and meets at 1651 Broadway, the cruise lasts 90 minutes and leaves from Chelsea Piers, Wollman lockers cost extra, and the Harlem concert meets at 201 Lenox Ave. For the Dyker Heights tour, going alone saves the fare but means a long trip after dark, so the tour suits readers who want a guide and a bus. For skating, the Wollman ticket from €25 on your own already includes skates, so a tour adds nothing there. The cruise has no do-it-yourself version, because you need a boat. Skip it if you have trouble with stairs or walking, because the listing says it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The four picks run from €25 for skating with rental skates to €120 for a 90-minute holiday cruise.

Conclusion
December in New York is easy to plan around a few dated events. The Rockefeller Center tree is lit on December 2, the Wollman Rink and Bryant Park rinks are open for skating, and the Times Square Ball drops at 11:59 pm on December 31. Add one booked evening, such as the Dyker Heights lights or a holiday cruise, and leave the rest of each day open for a warm stop. Book your hotel early, because December is one of the priciest months.
