Food tour or do it yourself?

A food tour is worth it on your first visit, if you want the stories with the food. The guide picks the stops and the order to eat in. On your own, you save money but need to plan.

For a list of places to try on your own, read our guide to the best food in NYC. Want more than food? See our New York City tours, from history walks to night tours.

If you would rather eat on your own, our guide to the best food in NYC is a good place to start.

Chinatown and Little Italy food tours

The best Chinatown and Little Italy food tour depends on your appetite. The 2-hour tour has four tastings and costs from €63. The 3-hour tour has six dishes and costs from €90.

Both walk the streets around Mulberry Street. The guides tell the story of the people who came here, and of the Mafia. Both have a private group option.

Want to explore on your own? Read about the NYC neighborhoods to plan your route.

Pizza on a food tour

Three of our picks include a slice of New York pizza: both Chinatown and Little Italy tours and the Greenwich Village walk. None is a pizza-only tour.

Walking food tours in Greenwich Village and Brooklyn

For classic New York bites, the Greenwich Village walk is the best pick. It takes 3 hours and has six tastings. It is rated 4.9.

Brooklyn has two walks by the same company, both up to 12 guests. One stays on Smith and Court Streets; the other goes through Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. Our Brooklyn tours guide has more to do there.

To learn which areas are good for eating on your own, see our guide to NYC neighborhoods.

Six-tasting food walks

Secret Food Tours runs two of our picks, in Chinatown and in Greenwich Village. Each has six dishes. The last one is a "secret dish" you only learn about on the tour.

Speakeasy and Prohibition bar tours

A speakeasy tour visits three bars in 3 hours and tells the story of Prohibition. Both of our picks cost from €36. Both start at 825 8th Ave.

The price covers entry and the guide, not the drinks. You buy your own, and card fees may be added. You must be 21 or older.

For live music instead of a bar, our guide to Harlem gospel tours covers Sunday concerts uptown.

Food markets you can visit on your own

You can visit food markets in New York for free and pay only for what you eat.

Chelsea Market is indoors and open every day, so it works in any weather. Essex Market has more than 30 vendors under one roof on the Lower East Side. Smorgasburg is outdoors, on weekends only, from April to October.

  • Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue: 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Closed on Christmas Day.
  • Essex Market, 88 Essex Street on the Lower East Side: open Monday to Wednesday 8 AM to 8 PM, Thursday to Saturday 8 AM to 9 PM, and Sunday 10 AM to 6 PM.
  • Smorgasburg runs in Williamsburg on Saturdays and Prospect Park on Sundays, 11 AM to 6 PM.

Booking tips for New York food tours

  1. Go hungry

The six-tasting walks and the Brooklyn Heights walk serve a lot of food. Skip the meal before.

  2. Plan for 2 to 3 hours on foot

Every tour here is a walk of 2 or 3 hours. Wear comfortable shoes.

  3. Tell them about allergies

Tours serve set dishes. The cupcake tour says it does not suit people with food allergies.

  4. Bring cash for tips

Tips are not included on any of these tours. On the bar tours, drinks cost extra too.
