Harlem gospel tours and concerts

Harlem gospel tours come in two kinds: a 1-hour concert, or a longer tour with a church service. A concert is a set show. A service is real worship with a local church.

Read what each one covers. Some include a walk and a café stop; others are music only.

Visiting a Sunday service

Yes, visitors can go to a Sunday service in Harlem. Abyssinian Baptist Church, at 132 Odell Clark Place, holds Sunday worship at 10 AM.

The church says to come as you are: some people dress formally, others casually. You can tell the church ahead that you are coming. It also livestreams every Sunday service.

A service is worship, not a show. Ask your guide about photos. On the Sunday gospel walk, a gift to the church's offering plate is not included.

Harlem walking tours

Harlem walking tours show the streets, murals and music history of the area. The 4-hour gospel tour also passes the Apollo Theater and Sugar Hill.

For other parts of the city, our city tours page covers SoHo to the Upper East Side.

Central Park's north end is close to Harlem. See our Central Park tours to add it to your day.

To see where Harlem sits in the city, read our guide to NYC neighborhoods.

Harlem jazz

Harlem is known for jazz as well as gospel. A Harlem jazz tour visits clubs at night with a guide. The Harlem Jazz Series plays 1-hour concerts on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Booking tips for Harlem

  1. Pick the right day

Concerts run on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Services and the tours with a service run on Sundays.

  2. Check what the tour covers

A concert is music only. A Sunday tour adds a walk and a service. Read the listing before you book.

  3. Check your meeting point

Tours start in different places. One meets in Hell's Kitchen, one has two meeting points, and the rest meet in Harlem.

  4. Bring cash for tips

Tips for the guide are not included on several tours. Neither is a gift to the church.
