Stand-up comedy shows in New York

Stand-up comedy shows in New York run every night in small clubs. Greenwich Village has its own comedy row, on and around MacDougal Street.

A night at a club is short, about 1.5 to 2 hours. That makes it easy to pair with tickets for Hamilton on Broadway or another show.

A cheap ticket is not the whole price. Most clubs add a drink minimum, so count that in when you compare.

Comedy show tickets: what you pay at the door

At the Comedy Cellar, the cover depends on the day. You also pay a two-item minimum for each person.

DayComedy Cellar cover (official site)
Friday and Saturday$25
Sunday$18
Monday to Wednesday$15 (New Joke Night $10, Hot Soup Comedy $20)
Thursday$18
Holidays and special events$25

A comedy show tonight: what you can still book

For a comedy show tonight, book one of our cards or check the live list further down. It shows the club shows with seats left.

Club shows start in the evening and run late. Line-ups change, so book the club, not one comic.

For more late plans, read our guide to NYC at night.

Looking for more to do after the show? See our guide to NYC at night.

The Comedy Cellar: rooms, times and standby

The Comedy Cellar runs three rooms in Greenwich Village. They are the original room on MacDougal Street, the Village Underground and the Fat Black Pussycat.

It sells its own seats, so you book on its own site. Shows are phone-free: your phone and smart watch go into a locked pouch you keep.

Drink minimums and age rules

Other clubs you can book direct

Gotham Comedy Club, in Chelsea, checks your photo ID and the card you paid with. Its tickets are non-refundable. Arrive 30 minutes before the show.

New York Comedy Club has three rooms: 241 East 24th Street, 85 East 4th Street and 236 W 78th Street.

Booking tips for comedy shows

  1. Line-ups change

Clubs use a changing line-up of comics. Book for the club and the time, not for one name.

  2. Count the minimum

Add two drinks or two items a person to the ticket price. Water and soft drinks count at the Comedy Cellar.

  3. Bring a photo ID

Many clubs are 18+ or 21+. Gotham checks ID at the door, and the Comedy Cellar is 21+.

  4. Arrive early

Gotham asks you to arrive 30 minutes before the show. At hosted clubs, a host shows you to your seat.
