The famous jazz clubs: Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Birdland

Three famous jazz clubs come up most in New York: the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note and Birdland. You book each one on its own site.

At the Vanguard, you pay in advance online. Seats are first come, first served, so silence your phone and keep talk low. The Blue Note also has a Sunday brunch show at 1:30 PM.

Birdland is near 42 St-Port Authority, close to the theatres. It pairs well with tickets for Hamilton on Broadway.

Jazz clubs in the West Village

For a smaller room, try Smalls Jazz Club. It is an underground club, in a basement at 183 West 10th Street. Its sister club is Mezzrow.

Smalls runs late sets. One listing ran from 11:55 PM to 4 AM, but the schedule changes, so check its site.

The Greenwich Village jazz crawl visits two clubs in the Village with a guide. For more late plans, read our guide to NYC at night.

Covers, minimums and age rules

Each club sets its own minimum and age rule. A minimum is a spend, not a set meal: you choose what to order.

ClubMinimumAge
Village VanguardOne drink (soft drinks and water count)15+
Blue Note$20 food or drink per showAll ages at tables; bar 21+, bring ID or no refund
Birdland$20 food or drink per person10+; under-21s at tables or with an adult at the bar

Jazz in Harlem and at Lincoln Center

Two of our picks take you to Harlem for jazz. The jazz tour visits clubs with a guide. The Harlem Jazz Series is a 1-hour concert near Mount Morris Park.

Dizzy's Club, part of Jazz at Lincoln Center, plays live jazz seven nights a week. It is at Broadway and 60th Street.

Jazz cruises on the harbor

A jazz cruise mixes live music with views of the harbor. All three cruises leave from Chelsea Piers and last 90 minutes.

Each one includes one drink; tips and more drinks cost extra. For more date ideas, read our guide to things to do in NYC for couples.

Booking tips for jazz in New York

  1. Club tickets are often final sale

The Village Vanguard refunds only if you ask within 24 hours of buying. Tickets bought within 48 hours of the show are final sale. Our cards show free cancellation.

  2. Come early for a good seat

Seats are first come, first served at the Vanguard and the Blue Note. Arrive when the doors open.

  3. Plan for the minimum

Add the drink or food minimum to the ticket. It is a spend, so a drink can cover it.

  4. Holiday cruises sell by season

The two holiday cruises run in the festive season. Book early if you want a date close to the holidays.
