New York Train Tours: A Step-by-Step Guide

New York train tours are mostly day trips that you ride on your own, because no company runs a guided tour by rail from the city. Metro-North goes to the Hudson Valley, the Long Island Rail Road goes east, and Amtrak goes to Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and even Canada, all from stations in Manhattan.

You can plan the whole trip in six steps.

StepWhat to doWhat to watch for
1. Pick a tripMatch the destination to the time you haveA full day on trains means 6 hours or more
2. Hudson ValleyTake Metro-North or Amtrak up the riverMetro-North leaves from Grand Central
3. Long IslandTake the Long Island Rail Road eastBeach and village times are not published here
4. Philadelphia and WashingtonTake Amtrak south from Moynihan Train HallFares change by date
5. CanadaTake the Maple Leaf or the AdirondackEach runs once a day

Step 1: Pick your New York train tours by travel time

Philadelphia is the shortest big-city trip from New York, at about 1 hour 18 minutes on the Acela, and Washington DC is the longest sensible day at about 3 hours each way. The Acela is Amtrak's fastest train. The table below shows what the timetables list for each trip.

Our guide to new york one day trips covers the bus and car options as well. Here the focus is the train.

The Acela times come from Amtrak's Acela timetable, dated October 22, 2026. Amtrak trains leave from Moynihan Train Hall, which is part of Penn Station. From Times Square, take the subway to the 34 St-Penn Station stop. For fares and the subway, see our page on getting around NYC.

Two notices were live when we checked. Amtrak lists reduced weekend service between New York and Boston until November 1, and repair work on the Portal North Bridge that affects some Northeast Corridor trains from October 9 to November 15. Both notices are worded as Amtrak shows them in its alerts, so check the day you travel.

Key Takeaway Only Philadelphia and the Hudson Valley fit a relaxed day on the train, while Washington DC takes about 6 hours of riding and Boston takes more than 8.

Step 2: Take Metro-North or Amtrak to the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley is the easiest escape by train, because Metro-North's Hudson Line leaves from Grand Central and reaches Cold Spring in about 70 minutes. MTA's day-trip page for Cold Spring gives that time and says you can walk from the platform into the village. The page is old, so check the current timetable before you go.

MTA's pages were blocked to our reading tools on the day we checked, so we cannot confirm the current fares or every departure. MTA's Hudson Line page lists extra Saturday and Sunday foliage trains between Grand Central and Beacon until November 8. If you go in autumn, ask the ticket office or the MTA app whether they still run.

Amtrak is the other way up the river. On the day we checked, its Empire Service timetable shows a train leaving Moynihan Train Hall at 10:20 am on weekdays and weekends. It reaches Poughkeepsie in about 1 hour 25 minutes, and Hudson, New York, at around 12:30 pm. Amtrak fares change by date and show only in the booking, so we print none.

Philadelphia 1 h 18 min Washington DC about 3 h Boston about 4 h Niagara Falls, NY 9 h 45 min

Step 3: Ride the Long Island Rail Road east

The Long Island Rail Road, or LIRR, is the commuter train to Long Island, and it leaves from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison. The JFK Airport website names both stations as the places to board for the AirTrain connection. We could not read the LIRR timetables for the beach towns, so we give no ride times or fares for them.

One fare rule is worth knowing. MTA treats weekday trains that arrive in the city between 6 and 10 am, or leave it between 4 and 8 pm, as peak, and peak tickets cost more. Off-peak travel on a day trip costs less.

Beach days depend on the weather and on how the last train home fits your plans, so look at the evening timetable before you choose a town. The tour route is different. The Hamptons, Sag Harbor and outlet day trip from €160 goes by bus and lasts 14 hours. It stops in Southampton and Sag Harbour and gives outlet discount coupons, and the listing mentions a wine tasting for guests over 21. It is a village and shopping day, not a beach day, and the listing names no beach time. Empire Vacations runs it, and the meeting point is 330 W 42nd St.

Pro Tip On the LIRR, travel between 10 am and 4 pm on a weekday to stay outside the peak window that MTA lists, and you may pay less than the rush-hour rider.

Step 4: Take Amtrak south to Philadelphia or Washington

Amtrak is the right train for Philadelphia and Washington, because both trips are one direct ride from Moynihan Train Hall. To Philadelphia, the Acela takes about 1 hour 18 minutes. To Washington Union Station, the Acela takes between 2 hours 57 minutes and 3 hours 6 minutes, and weekday trains leave about once an hour from 6:50 am to 8 pm.

The slower Northeast Regional is the other Amtrak train on this route. Its timetable lists about 3 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes to Washington. Amtrak boarding gates at Union Station close 3 minutes before departure, so arrive early. Fares change by date and show only in the booking, so check Amtrak for the day you want.

A day in Washington by train means about 6 hours riding and little time left for sights. If that sounds like too much, tours to DC from New York cover the day by bus with a guide. The full-day Washington DC highlights tour from €109 lasts 14 hours. It includes return transport, a tour guide and Wi-Fi on the buses, and it leaves from 330 W 42nd St. The listing names Arlington National Cemetery and views of the Capitol, and tips, food and drinks are not included.

The best day trip by train is the one where the station is close to what you came to see.

Philadelphia is the easier case on your own. The Acela leaves you with a full day there, and the ride home is about as short. You do not need a tour to see it.

Step 5: Know how Amtrak reaches Canada

Yes, Amtrak goes to Canada from New York, on two trains that each run once a day. The Maple Leaf leaves Moynihan Train Hall at 7:15 am and reaches Niagara Falls, New York, at 5 pm, a ride of 9 hours 45 minutes. On weekdays the Maple Leaf timetable shows it reaching Toronto's Union Station at 7:43 pm.

The Adirondack goes to Montreal. Its Adirondack timetable shows a daily train leaving at 8:15 am and reaching Montreal's Central Station at 8:16 pm. Maple Leaf times change by season, so check the date you travel.

Neither trip works as a day trip, since the Maple Leaf has one train each way. The southbound train leaves Niagara Falls, New York, at 11:40 am and reaches Moynihan Train Hall at 9:16 pm. Plan to stay at least one night. For Niagara by tour, see our page on Niagara Falls tours from NYC.

You need a valid passport to cross the border. The Canadian government's website lists who needs a visa or an eTA, and the answer depends on your passport.

Step 6: Decide between the train and a guided tour

Take the train if you want to go at your own pace, and book a tour if you want a guide and no planning. On the train, you choose the time and the stops, and you pay only for a ticket. On a tour, someone else handles the route, the timing and the guide.

Things to Do in NYC's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 23 guided day trips out of New York, with a median start price of €101 per person.

Trains lose to tours in one case. If the place you want is not on a rail line, as with the Hamptons villages and the outlet mall in the tour listing, a bus tour is simpler than a train plus a taxi. Trains win when the destination is a station town, such as Philadelphia, Cold Spring or Hudson.

Each of the two tours above is rated 4.5 on GetYourGuide. The Washington tour has 2,940 reviews and the Hamptons tour has 168, and both offer free cancellation.

Add a guided day trip to your train plan

A guided bus day takes the planning off your hands. The Washington DC highlights tour is from €109 per person and the Hamptons and outlet day is from €160, both 14 hours with free cancellation and run by Empire Vacations.

FAQ

Where can I visit by train from New York City?

You can reach the Hudson Valley on Metro-North or Amtrak, Long Island on the Long Island Rail Road, and Philadelphia, Washington DC and Boston on Amtrak. Amtrak's Maple Leaf also goes to Niagara Falls and Toronto, and the Adirondack goes to Montreal. Philadelphia, at about 1 hour 18 minutes on the Acela, is the easiest full-day trip.

How far is Times Square from Amtrak?

Amtrak trains leave from Moynihan Train Hall, which is part of Penn Station. The simplest way from Times Square is the subway to the 34 St-Penn Station stop. Neither Amtrak's timetables nor the MTA pages we could read give a walking time, so plan on the subway and leave extra time.

Does Amtrak go to Canada from New York?

Yes. The Maple Leaf leaves Moynihan Train Hall at 7:15 am and reaches Toronto's Union Station at 7:43 pm on weekdays. The Adirondack leaves at 8:15 am and reaches Montreal's Central Station at 8:16 pm. You need a valid passport, and the Canadian government's website lists who also needs a visa or an eTA (electronic travel authorization).

Conclusion

A train trip out of New York works best when you pick the destination by travel time. Philadelphia and the Hudson Valley fit an easy day, Washington DC is a long but doable day, and Boston and Canada need a night away. Check the timetable on the day, because Amtrak and MTA change service for repair work. If you want a guide and no planning, book a bus tour instead.
